CS:GO updates sound spatialization

Like we said in the cs:go pre-order article, Valve is going to bring out a lot of update before August 14th, and the first big one is a massive change to sound spatialization. If we take a look at the earlier versions of Counter-Strike, 1.6 produces stereo sound using a particular cross-fading algorithm for both headphones and speakers. And in Source (and recently in GO) spatialization is optimized for 5.1 surround speakers, and that signal is down-mixed when you use headphones our stereo speakers. Take a look at the image to get a better perspective about it.

So in the upcoming sound update you will have the possibility to configure your own preferred speaker placement and cross-fading algorithms. Valve also provides presets that are optimized for headphones, speakers and surround-sound setups. This should give new and old players the advantage to customize their setup to match their own playing style.

Well hopefully they let us put down weapons in CSGO SDK . And the ability to have custom sounds as well .

I mentioned that in my mapping feedback. That'd be very important.

I think you got the 5.1 sound system wrong, if not then valve messed up.. The human ear is very bad at recognizing sound direction from somewhere in front of the head. I went over it with the sound engineer at my work (We build speakers), anyways the 3 front sound direction on your image for csgo 5.1 won't be do able with a headset or a speaker system within range of 3 meters. 5.1 and 7.1 headsets only cover the back 180 degrees and an uppper direction, while 7.1 also has one coming from the lower part of the headset.

Any sound coming from your front will sound like it happens on top of your head.. It'll might work with a good surround sound system positioned correctly, but it would definitely be stupid of valve to try and make sound coming from somewhere in front of the head.

    But good read anyways :)

You can always check it here: www.counter-strike.net

But I have no problem with positioning with my 5.1 headset. I mean when I hear a guy (in bf3) moving a little to the left in front of me I can hear that clearly and know where he is.
